There are two key regulatory considerations which must be understood for any loft conversion project;
- Planning Permission
- Building Regulation
In many cases it is permissible to undertake a loft conversion project without making a formal application for Planning Permission from the local authority. Depending on the nature of the work proposed it may be possible to carry out the work under Permitted Development.
However, if your proposals involve changes to the roof with new dormers or the introduction of new skylights then the proposals may require a formal
application for planning permission.
If the house is within a Conservation Area, or is a listed building then further applications will be necessary to obtain further approvals before work can commence.
Whatever the Planning Permission requirements are there will always be a duty to satisfy the Building Regulations
